On 1 October, we celebrate Older People’s Day everywhere. Twice in Hamburg: once in the parish hall of St Michael’s Church, Hamburg’s landmark. The main theme: age and migration, migrants, who came and who stayed. Many older migrants do not speak German well, we should offer appropriate courses, because participation without language skills is difficult. We also need more culturally sensitive care and local health centres.
Old age was celebrated properly in a Hamburg club, the Knust, with a free glass of sparkling wine and orange juice, good music and lots of conversation: celebrating against loneliness! The association Wege aus der Einsamkeit (Ways out of loneliness) organises the event every year and there are already many regular guests!
