„DREAMING IN THE SHADOWS“
THE CONSEQUENCES OF THE RUSSIAN WAR OF AGGRESSION FOR OLDER PEOPLE IN UKRAINE
14 DECEMBER 2023
5.30PM–7PM
AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL DEUTSCHLAND and BAGSO (Federal working group of senior citizens’ organizations in Germany)
More older people are impacted by the war in Ukraine than in any other conflict in the world. Millions of these older people also have disabilities, and 80 percent of them live below the poverty line. How can humanitarian support for Ukraine take into account the needs of these people? Amnesty International researcher Laura Mills and other guests (invited) will discuss this topic.
The short documentary film Dreaming in the Shadows by the independent Ukrainian director Marina Chankova will also be shown. The film features three older people in Ukraine who have been displaced by or are still living in areas directly impacted by the war. However, the film shows how these people all try to hold onto their dignity and independence in the midst of brutal war, and highlights the dreams and hopes they have for the future.
Laura Mills is a researcher at Amnesty International focusing on older people and people with disabilities in armed conflict and emergency situations. She has extensively documented the situation in Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. Before joining Amnesty International, she worked as a journalist in Ukraine.
The event will take place in English and German.
Prior registration is required at kampagnen@amnesty.de.
The event will be livestreamed. Please contact us for a link to the stream at the above e-mail address.
